He Does Not Die A Death Of Shame is a novel which compares and contrasts anti-Semitism in 20th-century Europe with apartheid in South Africa. It attempts to illustrate the similarities between the persecution of the Jews in Europe and the oppression of Blacks in South Africa and to describe the influence of the suffering of one generation upon the development of the following generation.
The story spans two generations from 1908 to 1972. It follows the lives of two young men, one white, one black, in apartheid South Africa. Their destinies become inexorably intertwined in their pursuit of what is right.
Zak Ginsberg grows up in the shadow of his parents’ sad histories. He seeks solace from his Zulu nanny, Zanele, and befriends her son, Simon. Awareness of the Second World War, his Jewishness and the status of the black population slowly infiltrate Zak’s consciousness.
Simon, whose real name is Mpande Gumede, has spent an idyllic childhood in rustic Zululand. At high school, he realizes for the first time that he is a second-class citizen. He rejects the chance of becoming an academic and chooses instead to become a freedom fighter.
Zak studies the art of saving lives. Simon learns the craft of destroying lives. Both are drawn into the anti-apartheid struggle.
The one acts because his ancestors were victims, the other because he himself is a victim.

The South African Jewish Report
”…exceptional and ambitious.
…this book contextualises, traces, and lays out the history and zeitgeist of a generation (or many of
them, at any rate) – the children of immigrant Lithuanian Jews, born in South Africa in the 1940s,
‘50s and even ‘60s. At the same time, it does the same for a black generation (or many of them) also
born in those years.
…Hoffmann delivers all this with intelligence and balance.
What’s most remarkable about this book is its texture and attention to detail. For Hoffmann’s
recreation of that era – what things were like, what you saw, how primary and high school “felt”,
what living in South Africa in the ‘50s and ‘60s was like – is well-nigh faultless.
…a book of meticulous texture – the reader feels its characters’ experience and the grain of their
lives. Above all, this book is extraordinarily compassionate because it succeeds at entering in and
showing everyone’s lives without being judgmental.
This might sound sentimental – and doubtless it is – but reading this book was “gentling” for me.”

The Jerusalem Report
”Hoffmann…. is a fine writer….
Be warned: This is the kind of book that might cause to you to smile or even laugh as you
read it, but it will ultimately make you cry. Once you start reading it, though, you may not
be able to put it down.’

. ”A splendid book which juxtaposes the needs of conscience and one’s place in society.’

”A rare gem fusing literary genres….
(It) does not take us down the beaten path and feed us the same clichés we’ve heard
before. Here, novel insights are presented in a beautiful, elegiac language, and a
profoundly gripping and genuinely unique ending turns everything on its head. And
throughout all of it, heartwarming humor bubbles beneath the surface, making the pain of
the characters just a little less terrible to endure…..
I would recommend it to anyone who seeks something more from a novel than just a quick
thrill, and who would like to be challenged, emotionally as well as intellectually.’

. amazing….I am glad to have encountered characters like Zak Ginsberg and Mpande
Gumede who stood for their own truths.
This is the best indie novel that I’ve read so far in 2019.’

This is a very interesting book about discrimination, passion, racism and prejudice…
carefully crafted and accurately depicts the period, the people and relationships in the
South Africa of my youth and childhood. I recommend this book.’
